Nepal Earthquake
Good to be home after a month in Nepal on behalf of the Australian Himalayan Foundation delivering emergency aid in the Lower Solu Khumbu and assessing damage to schools in that region.
Sad to say that of 60 schools visited, 58 were damaged or destroyed and we were only able to see one quarter of the schools in AHF’s area of operation. While the Solu Khumbu did not suffer the concentrated devastation that occurred in the Langtang and Gorkha regions, it still incurred significant damage and loss of housing in most villages, particularly from the second quake. Together with our partner agency in Nepal, we distributed 300 tarpaulins plus tents, blankets, sleeping bags, rain wear, clothing, radios, toys and food. We also restocked health posts in the area with trauma supplies. As the only NGO operating in that area after the first earthquake, we found a number of victims who still hadn’t received medical treatment but with the help of two doctors from the International Porter Protection Group, we were able to render first aid assistance. We also evacuated two small children who needed urgent medical care.
All of this was funded by donations to the AHF, both private and corporate. So thankyou! Amidst the trauma and devastation it was heartening to see the odd smile, as in the attached (post-op) photo. The road ahead for Nepal will be long and difficult but together with your continued generosity there can be hope and commitment. I’m looking forward to working closely with the AHF as it supports the recovery program.
